Felis yaguarondi (Jaguarundi)


Description: The legs are very short and the body long and slender. The ears are small and round. Coat: Either uniform red, almsot black or uniform grey-brown, lighter in both cases underneath, all three colour form can be born in the same litter. The eyes are brown and the pupil contracts to slit.
Size: Head and body length 55-77cm, tail length 33-61cm.
Weight: 4.5-10 kg.
Senses: Moves with grace and agility on the ground and in the trees.
Habitat: Forest, savanna and scrub, often near water.
Range: They prefer to ocupy territories with plenty of scrub and bushes, low branches and brambles in which it can hide.
Distribution: Arizona to N Argentina.

Daily Rhythm: Active at both day and night but most active at twilight.

Prey: Birds, rabbits, rodents, frogs, fish and poultry.
Food and Feeding: Unlike most other felids they tend to spend alot of time on the move, actively seeking prey.
Grouping: Solitary.
Breeding: There are two breeding season per year, in the spring and then again in the summer. Each time the female can produce a litter.
Gestation: 63-70 days.
Litter Size: 2-4 young per litter.
Young Description: The young are born with spotted coats.

Young Care: Females rear their kittens alone and after about 2 months they are weaned, they become independant about 4 months later.
